Following a request from the Solomon Islands Meteorological Service (SIMS), the Climate and Oceans Support Program in the Pacific (COSPPac) team provided audiovisual equipment and training in October 2023 including interview training and audiovisual production. Phase 3 of the COSPPac project is now underway until June 2027 and improved communications is a key focus of this phase.

During the training, participants produced a one-minute video about SIMS, which can be now viewed on the SIMS Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/SIweather/

SIMS have since used the A/V equipment to communicate about the three tropical cyclones that they have already experienced only six weeks into the tropical cyclone season; to livestream their annual National Climate Outlook Forum; and, to help broadcast weather information for the SOL23 Pacific Games held in Honiara in November 2023.

Photo 1 shows interview practice with SIMS staff. Severe Tropical Cyclone Lola was born in the Solomon Islands one week before the tropical cyclone season had formally begun, so we had a live cyclone to talk about in practice interviews! Training 23-25 October 2023.

Photo 2 shows filming at the Honiara tide gauge for the SIMS video.  This tide gauge network celebrated 30 years in 2023, monitoring rising sea levels and providing invaluable data for ocean and tsunami warnings. More information at: http://www.bom.gov.au/pacific/projects/pslm/index.shtml

Photo 3 show SIMS Observer Brightly in the SIMS video. Brightly spoke in local Pidgin language to explain the importance of weather and climate information for saving lives and properties.
