An online event to raise awareness about the linkages between climate change, disaster and gender was held on 12th December 2023. This session exclusively targeted members of the Australian Awards Women Leading & Influencing (WLI) program. The aim of the session was for WLI members to access information that will assist them develop and implement micro climate change/disaster projects in their communities.

Seventeen participants were present to obtain information about the climate and climate change as well as examples of mitigation and adaptation projects that are currently being implemented in both PNG and Fiji led by fellow WLI members Mary Konobo (PNG) and Nanisi Tuqiri (Fiji) respectively.  Participants were thankful that a lot was learnt during the session and particularly where climate change also brings about opportunities and not just challenges.

At the end of the session, WLI launched its “Call for Applications” for a special Leadership Fund targeted at “climate change and disaster”.  Applications are now open for WLI members to access AUD$5,000.00 to implement community-based initiatives within the next funding period that runs from 1st January to 30th April, 2024.

The event was co-facilitated by APCAN and Women Leading & Influencing (WLI).  More information about the session can be obtained from Resources | Women Leading and Influencing (wliprogram.org)
