Dr Scott Power, from the Bureau of Meteorology and one of the foremost climate scientists working in the Pacific region, presented a Pacific climate science update to participants at the Australia Pacific Climate Partnership’s 2019 regional workshop, held in Canberra from 28-31 October. Scott’s presentation included how climate in the Pacific has changed, the critical role of greenhouse gas increase in some of the changes and how Pacific climate is projected to change over the coming century. Extreme high temperatures and sea level events across the region are expected to occur much more often, and Antarctic ice melt could produce faster sea level rise. Scott also demonstrated how small shifts in average temperatures can mean big increases in the likelihood of high extremes.
