The Support Unit recently fielded a climate change specialist to the design team for the new Australia and New Zealand Education Sector Support Program (ESSP). This program provides budget support to the Education Sector in Samoa for 2020 to 2024. Our specialist, Clare White, provided technical input into the program design. The ESSP team met with key stakeholders in Samoa in September 2019 to understand the priorities, issues and challenges for education in Samoa.

The ESSP budget prioritises a Climate Change and Disaster Risk Resilience Strategy and implementation plan as identified in the Samoan Education Sector Plan. Funding is provided for Technical Assistance to develop and support implementation of the strategy. The Samoan Ministry of Education, Sport and Culture has identified a climate change and disaster focal point who will coordinate within the sector. Annual reviews and dialogues between the Development Partners and the Samoan Education Sector will help guide the continued climate and disaster resilience mainstreaming.

All of this means that Australia is contributing to a much bigger focus on climate change education in Samoa!
