A multi hazards approach is the way to go

In early February, 2020, Marty Hazelwood from Geoscience Australia (GA) accompanied the Support Unit during their integration visit to PNG Post. The Support Unit has a work program arrangement with GA to provide the expertise and brains trust on all things geohazard, so we can support needs and provide advisory services to DFAT programs on these as well as on climate risks and resilience building. The Support Unit's DRR adviser, Jeong Park works closely with the GA team, pictured here hard at work in Moresby.

GA also manages an ongoing project to build capability in GoPNG to address earthquake and tsunami risks, which play havoc with transport and other critical infrastructure. The shock of the powerful earthquake that struck the highlands in 2018 is still reverberating through local livelihoods and the national economy. These events impact across the board, limiting access to markets, health and education services for long periods of time. Developed over many years of engagement in the region, GA is our primary source of quality hazard risk information.
